Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI features which tool to shortlist, and the reply names some brands and leaves others out. Whether your brand is named, and which pages the answer draws on, is what AI search visibility describes.

This applies to any brand whose buyers research in AI assistants or in Google's AI features, especially B2B categories full of comparison and "which tool" questions. One caveat shapes everything below. AI answers vary between runs, and each tool builds its question set differently, so treat a score as a trend inside one tool rather than an absolute truth.

What Is AI Search Visibility And What Does It Include?

AI search visibility is how often, and how accurately, a brand or page appears inside answers generated by AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, measured as mentions of the brand and citations of its pages across a fixed set of questions.

In plain terms, AI visibility means three things, and a useful definition covers all of them.

  • Presence: The answer names your brand at all. This is the mention.
  • Evidence: The answer lists or links one of your pages as a source. This is the citation.
  • Representation: The answer describes you correctly, for the right use case, next to the right competitors.

The engines in scope are the places buyers now get synthesised answers. That means Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode inside search, plus assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. Google's own AI features can pull from several related searches to build one response, so visibility depends on more than the single query a buyer typed.

The discipline around it goes by several names. Growth Tribune groups the definitions, practices and measurement under AI search visibility, GEO and AEO, and the sections below take each part in turn.

Why Does AI Search Visibility Matter For B2B Teams?

AI answers reduce clicks, which is why visibility inside the answer matters. In Pew Research Center's study of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared.

8%

The same Pew data shows how little the summary itself sends on. Links inside the AI summary were clicked in 1% of visits, and 18% of the Google searches in the study produced a summary at all. That is a U.S., Google-only picture from one month in 2025, not a forecast for every engine. It still makes the direction clear.

For a B2B team, the answer has become the first impression. A buyer who asks "which tools should I compare for X" may read a synthesised shortlist and move on. If your brand is in that list, described accurately, you influenced the shortlist without a session ever reaching your site. If it is missing, no amount of ranking work on page one shows up in that moment.

That changes how to judge the channel.

  • Visibility is not traffic. A mention can shape a buyer who never clicks, so sessions alone undercount its effect.
  • Influence is the unit. Judge it by how often you are named and cited in the questions buyers ask before they talk to sales.
  • Pipeline is the test. Mentions count once they show up in demos, trials and sourced deals, which is why referral and self-reported attribution matter alongside the visibility numbers.

How Is AI Visibility Different From SEO Rankings?

AI visibility differs from an SEO ranking because there is no single fixed position. Google's documentation for AI Overviews and AI Mode says both may run a query fan-out across subtopics, and that no extra requirements or special optimisations are needed to appear in them.

Ranked search returns an ordered list of links for one query. An AI answer is assembled from several searches and sources, written fresh, and can change on the next run. The table sets the two side by side.

Two practical points follow.

First, SEO remains the foundation. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, so standard SEO practice applies to both.

Second, the reporting gap is real. Google includes clicks from its AI features in a site's overall search traffic in Search Console, without a separate AI line. You cannot read AI Overview performance from Search Console alone, which is why AI visibility needs its own measurement model.

What Do AEO And GEO Mean? The Terminology Explained

AEO and GEO are two names for overlapping practices aimed at one outcome, AI search visibility. The term GEO comes from a Princeton-led paper on Generative Engine Optimization, which reported that its methods raised source visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% on the authors' own benchmark.

The table sets out the main terms and what each is judged by.

AI search terminology

AI search terminology
TermWhat it meansJudged by
AEOEarning a place in direct answersAppearing in answers
GEOShaping how generative engines include a sourceMentions and citations in AI responses
AI search visibilityThe outcome all of them targetMention and citation rates

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of earning a place in direct answers. It is judged by whether a brand or page appears in the answers a system gives.

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) takes its name from the paper by Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande, which framed the problem as how generative engines include and represent a source when they write an answer from many.

The useful distinction is between practice and outcome. AEO and GEO are things a team does. AI search visibility is what the team measures to see whether the work landed.

A mention and a citation measure different things in an AI answer. A mention means the answer names the brand in its text, while a citation means the answer lists or links one of the brand's pages as a source, and Ahrefs, for example, counts each at most once per response.

Ahrefs' published definitions for Brand Radar make a good worked example of how tools count.

  • Mention. The brand appears at least once in the response. Repeats in one response still count as one.
  • Citation. A page appears at least once as a cited source. Several pages from one domain count as one citation for that domain.
  • Found in. Pages the system cited or only retrieved in the background, so a page can feed an answer without being shown.

Both units matter because they come apart. A brand can be mentioned without its own site being cited, because the answer drew on review sites, forums or comparison pages that name it. A brand's page can also be cited without the brand being recommended, for example when a glossary page is used to define a term and a competitor gets the recommendation.

That is why a tracker that reports only one of the two units gives a partial picture. Mentions tell you whether you are in the conversation. Citations tell you which pages, yours or other people's, the engine trusts as evidence. The gap between them is where third-party coverage, reviews and comparison content earn their place in a plan.

How To Measure AI Search Visibility

AI search visibility is measured as a percentage rather than a position, meaning the share of runs across a fixed set of buyer questions in which a brand is mentioned or cited. SparkToro's research on AI brand recommendations concludes that visibility across dozens to hundreds of prompts, each run several times, is a reasonable metric.

Most tools and frameworks use some mix of the metrics below. Conductor's AEO course names five measures of success, and Ahrefs adds an impressions-based share of voice, so both appear here as vendor examples.

AI search visibility metrics

AI search visibility metrics
MetricWhat it answers
Mention rateHow often answers name you
Citation rateHow often your pages are sources
Share of voiceYour share against tracked rivals
Sentiment and accuracyWhether answers describe you correctly
AI referral trafficVisits arriving from assistants
AI crawler activityWhether AI bots reach your pages

The method matters more than the metric list. Four rules keep the numbers honest.

  1. Fix the question set. Build it from real buyer questions across problem, comparison and pricing stages, and keep it stable so changes reflect the answers rather than the prompts.
  2. Cover several engines. Buyers do not use one assistant, and results differ across them.
  3. Repeat every run. Ask each question several times per engine and report the share of runs, not the best screenshot.
  4. Report percentages. A mention rate of runs-with-mention over total runs can be tracked over time. A "position" cannot.

Two cautions apply to whatever tool produces the numbers.

Scores from different tools are not comparable. Each builds its prompt set differently. Ahrefs Brand Radar draws on a database of generated prompts, LLMrefs turns tracked keywords into prompts, and other tools work from custom prompts a team writes. Two tools can report different scores for the same brand in the same week, and both can be right about their own question sets.

Impressions-style metrics are estimates. Ahrefs' impressions sum the Google search volumes of prompts where the brand appears. That is a modelled reach figure derived from keyword data, not a count of people who saw an answer.

Referral traffic needs its own setup. Because Google folds AI-feature clicks into overall Search Console traffic, segment visits from assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity in your analytics tool and watch them as a separate trend.

Why Do AI Visibility Results Change From Run To Run?

AI answers rarely repeat, so a single check cannot show a brand's visibility. In SparkToro's test of 2,961 responses from ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, there was less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice, and about 1 in 1,000 of getting it in the same order.

The study was run by Rand Fishkin with Gumshoe.ai's Patrick O'Donnell. About 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, collected in November and December 2025. Their conclusion was blunt. Visibility as a percentage across many prompts and repeated runs is a reasonable metric. A ranking position in AI is not.

The consequences for reporting are direct.

  • One screenshot proves nothing. A brand that appears in one answer may be missing from the next, with nothing changed on either side.
  • "Rank first in ChatGPT" claims do not hold. If the same ordered list turns up roughly once in 1,000 runs, a reported position is a snapshot of noise.
  • Trends beat snapshots. Judge a change against the normal spread between runs before calling it a win or a loss.

Variance is also why a tool's "average position" metric needs care. Averaged across many runs it can show direction, but it describes a list that rarely repeats, so read it as a rough signal next to mention rate rather than as a rank.

How To Start Tracking AI Search Visibility

Tracking AI search visibility starts with a fixed list of real buyer questions, the AI engines those buyers use and the competitors to compare against, because every metric that follows is only as meaningful as the question set behind it.

Work through these decisions before choosing a tool.

  • Write the questions to track as buyers ask them, across problem, comparison and pricing stages
  • Pick the engines your buyers use, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Name the competitors to benchmark against, using real product-category rivals
  • Set the run frequency and how many times each question is repeated per run
  • Choose success measures, such as mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, description accuracy and AI referral sessions
  • Decide who acts on the findings, from content and SEO to product marketing

Keep the question set stable once it is live. Adding or swapping questions every month makes it impossible to tell whether visibility moved or the questions did. Add new questions as a separate group and report them apart until they have a history.

Improvement starts from the same foundation. Google says no special optimisation is needed for its AI features, so standard SEO work stays in the plan. Beyond that, the gap between mentions and citations shows where to act. If competitors are cited from review and comparison pages where you are absent, that is the content and coverage to build.

An Illustrative Scenario

The figures in this scenario are invented to show the calculation. They describe no real company. Assume a B2B SaaS team, of the kind that would compare AI visibility tools for B2B SaaS teams, sets up tracking like this.

Illustrative mention-rate calculation (invented figures)

Illustrative mention-rate calculation (invented figures)
InputValue
Buyer questions40
Engines3
Runs per question per engine5
Total runs600
Runs naming the brand150
Mention rate25%

The arithmetic is 40 questions × 3 engines × 5 runs = 600 runs. If the brand is named in 150 of them, the mention rate is 150 ÷ 600 = 25%. The same division works for citation rate, using runs in which one of the brand's pages is cited.

The assumptions matter as much as the result. The 25% holds only for these 40 questions, these three engines and this run count. Change any of them and the figure is no longer comparable with last month's.

Which Tools Measure AI Search Visibility?

AI visibility tools choose the questions they track in different ways. Ahrefs Brand Radar draws on a pre-built database of generated prompts plus custom prompts, LLMrefs turns tracked keywords into prompts, and Scrunch benchmarks by persona, topic and geography, so their scores are not directly comparable.

The five tools below are examples, not a ranking. The table compares how Ahrefs Brand Radar, LLMrefs and Scrunch choose their questions. For side-by-side evaluation, see the AI visibility platforms comparison.

Ahrefs Brand Radar

  • What it measures: Mentions, citations, "found in" pages, impressions and AI share of voice, plus AI-driven traffic and AI crawler visits through AI Analytics.
  • How prompts are set: The AI Visibility Index draws on a pre-collected database of hundreds of millions of prompts generated from Ahrefs keyword data, and Custom Prompts lets a team track its own buyer questions daily, weekly or monthly.
  • Engine scope: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with Claude added for custom prompts. AI Sources also tracks off-site sources such as YouTube, TikTok and Reddit.
  • Best fit: Teams that already run SEO in Ahrefs and want AI visibility next to their keyword data.
  • Limitation: Impressions and share of voice rest on search-volume estimates, not observed users, so treat them as modelled reach. Custom prompt usage is based on checks, so cost grows with the number of questions tracked and how often they run.

LLMrefs

  • What it measures: Share of voice, average position and cited source URLs, with CSV export and weekly reports.
  • How prompts are set: Keyword-first. LLMrefs generates prompts from tracked keywords and aggregates the responses.
  • Engine scope: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and DeepSeek, with country and language targeting.
  • Best fit: SEO teams that think in keywords and want AI visibility without writing a prompt set by hand. Agency accounts include unlimited projects and seats, so adding clients does not add seats.
  • Limitation: SE Ranking's review of LLM trackers, written by a competing vendor, lists its focus on keywords instead of prompts and less data for analysis. Read its average position with the variance caution above.

Scrunch

  • What it measures: Scrunch, a Sitecore Company since Sitecore acquired it in June 2026, measures prompts, topics and entities, with citations, competitor comparisons, a real-time feed of AI bot crawls and crawl-error detection. Its Agent Experience Platform (AXP) serves a machine-readable version of a site to AI agents.
  • How prompts are set: Benchmarking by persona, topic and geography.
  • Engine scope: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot.
  • Best fit: Enterprises running several sites, regions and languages, and agencies managing client brands.
  • Limitation: It is built for enterprise and agency deployments, which is more structure than a single-brand team starting out needs.

Rankscale

  • What it measures: Rankscale tracks a visibility score, citation rate, sentiment, rankings and sources-box analysis by brand, topic and model, plus page audits that score AI readiness from 200+ factors.
  • Engine scope: 17+ engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Mistral, configured per account. It also tracks AI shopping results.
  • Best fit: Agencies and multi-brand SEO teams that want wide engine coverage and a Looker Studio connector for reporting.
  • Limitation: Usage is credit-based, so more prompts and more runs use more credits, and those are the same inputs that make results reliable.

Conductor

  • What it measures: Conductor names five AEO success measures, namely AI visibility (mentions and citations), AI share of voice, brand sentiment in AI responses, AI referral traffic and AI crawler bot activity, including user agents such as GPTBot and Google-Extended.
  • Best fit: Enterprise SEO programmes that want AI visibility inside a wider suite with content tools, website monitoring and an MCP server that connects its data to ChatGPT, Claude and other models.
  • Limitation: It is a full enterprise platform, which is heavier than a standalone tracker for a small team that only needs mention and citation rates.

Agency teams weighing client separation and reporting can compare AI visibility tools for agencies on those points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you rank first in ChatGPT?

Not in any stable sense. ChatGPT rarely returns the same list of brands twice, so first place in one answer can vanish on the next run. SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance of a repeated list. Track how often your brand is mentioned across many runs instead of chasing one position.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic?

Google Search Console does not report AI Overviews or AI Mode clicks separately, because Google includes traffic from its AI features in a site's overall search traffic. AI Overview performance is therefore mixed into your normal totals. Referral visits from assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity need their own segment in your analytics tool.

How often should you measure AI visibility?

Often enough to see a trend, with several runs each time. SparkToro's research supports judging visibility across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times rather than one check. Keep the question set stable between checks so each result adds to a trend. Ahrefs Brand Radar, for example, runs custom prompts daily, weekly or monthly.

Do you need special optimisation for AI Overviews?

No, according to Google. Its Search Central documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations are necessary. Standard SEO practice remains the foundation. That guidance applies to Google's AI features, not to other assistants.
